Abstract

The Dichloromethane castor seed extract (DCSE) was assayed in a laboratory for its toxicity. These studies examine how DCSE affects the histology of the spleen and pancreas of rats and its potential as a rodent poison. This involved weighing doses of 10, 20, 30, and 40 ml of DCSE. Each dose was thoroughly mixed with 50 g of standard rat food. The control group received only the commercial rat food. The spleen and pancreas were taken out and preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin for histopathological studies. Photomicrographs of the tissue were taken and data were gathered on weight of treated and untreated rat spleen and pancreas. The data were analyzed using ANOVA, and means were separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test at 5% level of probability. The findings showed that the weights were found to be similar, with no notable differences in rat pancreas fed with 20 ml, 30 ml DCSE, and the untreated group. The pancreas demonstrated a statistically significant weight difference when fed with 10 ml, 20 ml DCSE, and the control group compared to rats fed with 30 ml and 40 ml DCSE. The weight of the spleen did not show significant differences when fed with 10 ml, 20 ml, or 30 ml of DCSE compared to the control group, while rats fed with 40 ml DCSE had reduced spleen weight. All tested pancreas and spleen revealed histological attributes of lethal tissue damage in rats treated with DCSE, while control group exhibited normal tissue.
